“Where is next?” I honestly have forgotten she flipped two pages, showing her with a group of three gothic people. “Okay the Goths… fun stuff! I said sarcastically. She laughed then stood up. She knew that breakfast was over. When we both threw our plates away and put up our trays the bell for class rang. Kelsey did her best to get the most basic freshman and sophomore classes, we both had driver’s education first block. My dad had paid before hand for me to take the driving portion of the class; he was amazing enough to have lent me six hundred and forty more dollars for Kelsey to take it too. I handed her the money, she took it without saying a word, but I could see her cheeks were bright pink. She handed the driving teacher the money and asked that whenever she had to drive she wanted me with her.
“Sure thing kitten, now your seat is over by Jason.” He pointed to a kid with all black on, except his face. His face was as white as the shirt that I had on today, and his ear, nose, and eye rings were all the same color of puke green. The first gothic in Kelsey’s notebook looked exactly like him. He is the entrance to the second step of the high school ladder. “John Cline!” He was sitting us all in our assigned seats.
“Yes sir?” I turned away from staring at Jason.
“Your seat is going to be beside Josie.” Again he was pointing at a gothic, there was a girl in her notebook too, that had the same blonde pig tails, same brown roots, and same snarl on her face. She is the second person that is in the Emos and Gothic’s group. “Radiator, your seat is between the cat and the mouse. I just knew that he was talking about us, one reason is because me and Kelsey were the only two people sitting down that had a ‘between’ and two was because he was the third person from Kelsey’s drawing. He had no “gothic” makeup on, but he was wearing nearly the same pants as Jason and a trench coat. He had the trench coats sleeves rolled up revealing the scars on his forearms. He had slick black hair, which was combed completely over his right eye. His hair went down to his collar, brushed onto his shoulders, and he was wearing a black headband that said touch me and you will catch on fire. That is when I noticed his fingers were burnt nearly to a pulp. Pyro! Kelsey and Jason were already having a conversation; Radiator doesn’t seem like the talking type.
“Hey Josie,” nothing else was able to escape my mouth. She looked at me, then Kelsey, then back at me.
“Hi.” She spoke with a scorn; nearly a blade flew out of her voice.
“Are you taking the driving portion of this class?” I smiled.
“Indeed.” She wasn’t smiling. “Don’t show emotion when you talk to me, emotion is a weakness of the heart.” She was rubbing her arms.
“Okay, what do your parents do?” I tried very hard not to smile.
“My mom is dead, my dad is dead. I live at a foster home. My foster dad is dead.” She still showed no emotion.
“You have a sad life, no wonder you are gothic.” I couldn’t help but frown.
“I told you, emotion is weakness. I am not gothic because I kill anyone I love, I am gothic because I love who I kill.” This time she was smiling, her red lipstick glimmered in the sun.
“Okay…” I had no emotion now because my brain couldn’t handle hearing it. The driving teacher had just sat everyone down. Radiator was staring at Josie and me the entire time, but he turned around when the driving teacher begun to talk.
“My name is Jordan Huey, but if I hear you call me Jordan I might have to do something about it. So, you guys will call me Mr. Huey.” He was smiling; I could hear a faint snarl coming from Josie’s mouth. “The very first thing that we will be learning about is signs, seeing on how signs can either, distract you from the road, be your life saver, or direct you towards the area you need to be. Raise your hand if you know what color construction signs are.” He held his hand up. Fourteen people in the class raised their hands, the gothic’s all left their hands on the desk, the three Gossips in the class were talking to each other, and the last two just didn’t know. “Okay, John Cline, what color are they?” He pointed at me.
“Orange or yellow, it depends sometimes.” My dad knew I was taking this class so when he is around he teaches me all the things he thinks I need to know about driving.
“Correct!” He repeated me, “next, what are the blue rectangular signs called?” He dragged his finger around and stopped on one of the nerds, Zach Fandom. Zach was put into the class because his counselor said that he needed it, he is a senior this year.
“They are instructional signs; they tell you where the nearest rest stops are, where air ports are, and other stuff.” He sniffled, he was sick today so his words were pretty slurred.
After class we went with Radiator and the other two, to the other four Goths.
“Who is this?” Feroschia pointed at me. I felt a gulp that I hadn’t planned. “He smells like fear.” Feroschia is a senior too this year, all of the Goths were. She has a face as white as Jason’s, vampire teeth, which I think are real and nice brunette hair that goes just below her shoulders, she was wearing a trench coat too. Radiator was sitting beside her, holding her. “Why are you here?” She seems like a rude person, but her makeup really lights up in the sun.
“We are here to join you.” Kelsey and I both spoke simultaneously. Kelsey was smart enough to have worn all black today.
“In order to be in our group you must have black clothes. Kelsey has the right stuff, but you need to have the looks too, you must learn to forget about emotion... No one would know that better than Feroschia.” Feroschia looked at Jason, her eyes were wide, but her mouth had no expression.
“Do you have any black shirts, John?” Jason looked to see that my pants were black. I looked at Kelsey who nodded her head for confirmation.
“I do have some; I have more black pants too.” I pointed; Faraday was staring because these weren’t their style of pants.
“We might as well help you poor souls, if you want to be like us, you need to dress like us too.” Feroschia jumped off of Radiators truck and pulled him down too. “We are going to Tamales.” Feroschia smiled, and then froze. Kelsey giggled, she loves Tamales.
The Goths all jumped in the cars, Feroschia left the doors to Radiators truck open. We both jumped in and tried to talk to him, but he still didn’t say a word. Yet, somehow Feroschia was laughing and talking, responding to her own questions, every few minutes Radiator couldn’t help but smile too. Then he decided to actually say something, he never once had to take off his headband during class.
“Okay, my name isn’t really Radiator, it is Ryan Radnor. We just had to drive far away enough that he wouldn’t catch us talking to you. Kelsey jumped when she heard Radiator talk; she seemed to of bounced out of a trance.
“Is it obvious that I am in love with John?” Kelsey questioned.
“Yeah, it kind of is, Jason started this group freshman year, so we know what love is when we see it.” Feroschia spoke. “And, my name isn’t really Feroschia Faraday, It is Florida, but I think Feroschia fits me better. Jason chose our names, he chose Radiator for Ryan because he can control fire, but his fingertips were burnt—“Faraday was interrupted.
“Long story…” Radiator spoke. “When my brother first tried to control water I wanted to use the opposite, so I taught myself how to control fire.” He paused.
“That is the shortest long story I have ever heard.” I spoke. Kelsey barked a huge laughter, making Radiator slightly lose control of the truck.
“I wasn’t finished, when my brother gained full control over his powers, he splashed water on me every day until it made me mad one day and I fought back. I got a huge fireball in my fingers, held it there and then it disappeared. I had killed my own brother. The scars on my fingers are a reminder of this curse, which is why I am Goth.” Feroschia has never had the entire talk like that, but I knew she knew most of it because she was nodding her head the entire time. When we arrived at Tamales Jason, Josie, and some other guy I didn’t know was there holding some girl I didn’t know.
“So, we have new victims?” The guy I didn’t know grinned. The girl attached to him had the exact same smirk. “Ah, we have some fresh blood.”
“My name is Slash, and this is my boyfriend, Scratch.” Slash spoke. Josie was looking at me, she still had that scornful look, but it had grown slightly less vicious.
“Hey Josie, how are you?” I didn’t smile, and I didn’t speak with emotion. I guess you could say I learn fast.
“As good as ever, maybe better,” She had lost the scornful look all together and turned her head to Jason, Jason was staring at Kelsey. She was looking at Faraday who was looking at Scratch. Scratch was looking at me. “Hold your girl John.” Josie pushed me into Kelsey, I tumbled and Kelsey grabbed me, holding me up. My face turned red, but I grabbed her, and held her under my arm. Her face was red too. She wrapped both of her arms around me, squeezed me, then let her right arm go, still having her left arm on my shoulder. When we walked into the mall we saw first the food court, the food court in this mall is huge. We walked straight towards Tamales; the first thing I heard was Turbot’s song Free from Sin.” Kelsey sang along under her breath. When we walked in, we saw many paintings and much more gothic people. A few of them had gothic collars and bracelets with silver spikes on them, and every single one of them had the exact same kind of pants as the group did. Kelsey and I went to the changing rooms to try a pair of the pants on, we both came back out at the same time, and laughed when we saw each other, and then smiled because they were really roomy. The group was all there watching us, but they still didn’t have any emotion. We went to the mall’s Berne’s to get some black shirts. I saw the kind of shirts they were wearing, they all were different, and Radiator was wearing silk, which is what I wanted to get too.
“Radiator, can you take me to the silk section?” I asked him. Kelsey smiled, she was rubbing her hands together, quite awkward, but I didn’t care.
“Josie, can you take me to the silk area too?” Kelsey asked. Josie nodded her head and took her away. Radiator took me away too.
“Why silk?” Radiator asked.
“It feels nice, like REALLY nice, and if Kelsey rubs it between her fingers it will feel so nice!” I had no emotion on my face, but my words still showed it.
“I don’t care if you show emotion, that rule was created by Josie, she just doesn’t like emotion, I don’t even know why…” Radiator took off a black shirt from a rack, but it said Adidas on it. “What size do you wear?” He put it back on the rack.
“I wear a large.” I was holding one as I talked; it was a black shirt with a symbol of twisted dragons. The symbol was designed into it; I couldn’t feel it when I rubbed my fingers in it to find out if it would tick me off. Radiator took the exact same shirt back off the rack and handed it to me. It was an extra large, but I didn’t care.
“We wear a size above usual because we don’t need anyone making fun of us, for any reason.” Radiator was the one smiling now.
“Why do Goths wear that white makeup on their faces?” I always wanted to know the answer to that.
“It is so that people can’t see us; we put the black around our eyes too, so that we won’t get blinded by the reflection of the sun on our faces.” He felt his perfectly flawless face; I don’t need it though, because I am not like the others, they are all very self-conscious.” He was at a different area now, looking at the extra large shirts. He got a certain one with a baby holding a girls head and a knife; it was from a very famous cartoon.
“I don’t know if I would wear that…” I said. Radiator turned to me.
“It isn’t for you.” He smiled.
“Thank God!” I breathed quietly. Radiator didn’t say anything about that.
We met up with the group soon after Radiator had picked out four more shirts for me, of course they were all black, but he got me one shirt that had crossed swords inside a ‘toxic’ symbol. The next was a Noun shirt, I knew that band, and they are really quite good. Third, was a plain black shirt, it had nothing special on it at all. Then I had a black shirt with red lines on the shoulders leading down to the button on my pants, this was the last silk shirt that Radiator had helped me pick out, I was able to get three silk shirts in total.
“Who thinks we need to eat?” Faraday held her stomach. The group nodded in agreement and we counted up the money we had in our pockets. Faraday had twenty dollars, Josie had forty, Slash and Scratch, being engaged, both shared a total of fifty, Jason and Radiator both had their own one hundred dollar bill, and Kelsey and I had a total of ninety dollars. We went to the Cluckin Burger. They had a wide variety of chicken sandwiches. The only food I was aware of was that Kelsey and I both got a Hawaiian burger with a side of chicken fries.
“So would you consider this a first date Kell?” I smiled and handed her the food.
“You know it!” She smiled; she ripped open the burgers package and nibbled a piece off.
“Welcome to the group, Kell and John.” Jason smiled, the other four smiled too. Josie was beginning to warm up to the two of us, losing her ability not to smile. We finished our burgers then went back to school, we skipped the first part of the only class that we didn’t have together and lunch today, but slash was in my next class with me.
